Building the Communications Backbone for a Mission-Critical Airport Environment

In 2025, Trendset Communications Group, LLC proudly completed a major structured cabling installation at the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in support of a new state-of-the-art communications system for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Years in the making, this project required careful coordination, detailed planning, and precise execution within one of the busiest and most security-sensitive transportation environments in Michigan. The new structured cabling solution installed by TCG provides the physical infrastructure needed to support modern communications technology used by Customs and Border Protection personnel operating inside the international travel environment at McNamara Terminal.

For a mission-critical facility like DTW, communications infrastructure is not just another technology upgrade. It is the backbone that supports daily operations, security workflows, team coordination, and reliable information exchange in a fast-moving airport environment.

A Project Years in the Making

The CBP communications upgrade was the result of extensive planning and collaboration between multiple stakeholders. CBP Supervisor Vaughn and the CBP team worked closely with system designer David McCarthy, CTO and co-founder of TCG, along with TCG’s field and project staff, to bring the installation from design to completion.

Because the project was located within an active airport terminal, every phase had to be carefully coordinated around operational requirements, security protocols, facility access, and the needs of multiple teams working in the same space. TCG’s experience in critical communications infrastructure helped ensure the installation stayed focused, organized, and aligned with the long-term goals of the communications system upgrade.

Working Alongside Delta Air Lines IT

A successful communications system cutover in an airport setting requires more than technical knowledge. It demands teamwork, timing, and trust.

TCG worked alongside Delta Air Lines IT staff throughout key portions of the project to support the final communications system cutover. This collaboration helped ensure the new infrastructure was properly installed, tested, and ready to support the transition to the upgraded system.

The nearly nine-month installation schedule reflected the complexity of the environment and the importance of getting every detail right. From cable pathways and terminations to testing and coordination with technology teams, TCG delivered a structured cabling solution built to support dependable communications in a high-demand setting.

Designed for Reliability, Installed with Precision

Structured cabling is often hidden behind walls, above ceilings, and inside telecom rooms, but its importance cannot be overstated. For public safety, transportation, federal operations, and critical communications systems, the quality of the cabling infrastructure directly impacts the reliability of the technology it supports.

TCG’s work at McNamara Terminal focused on creating a clean, organized, and scalable cabling foundation for CBP’s new communications system. The installation was completed with attention to performance, documentation, serviceability, and long-term support.

This project reflects TCG’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that is not only technically sound, but also ready for the real-world demands of mission-critical environments.

Supporting Critical Communications Across Michigan

As a Michigan-based certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise with 15 years of incorporation, TCG continues to support customers in municipal, commercial, transportation, utility, and high-security environments. The CBP structured cabling project at DTW McNamara Terminal is another example of TCG’s ability to manage complex communications infrastructure projects where reliability, coordination, and professionalism matter.

From planning and design support to installation and system cutover coordination, TCG is proud to have contributed to a project that strengthens communications capabilities for U.S. Customs and Border Protection at one of Michigan’s most important transportation hubs.

Project Team Recognition

TCG extends appreciation to CBP Supervisor Vaughn and the Customs and Border Protection team, Delta Air Lines IT staff, David McCarthy, and the TCG project and field teams who worked together to complete this important installation.

Projects like this are built on more than cable, pathways, and hardware. They are built on coordination, experience, and the shared goal of creating communications systems that work when they are needed most.
